Why CIO?

In Germany 440.000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year and almost every second person can be cured. Decisive for therapeutic success is the close cooperation of clinical specialists without delay following diagnosis. In order to enhance the healing process further, it is essential that scientific discoveries are translated into daily clinical practice as quickly as possible.

The Center for Integrated Oncology Köln Bonn is among the first five centres of Excellence for cancer treatment and research in Germany and has been funded since 2007 by the Germany Cancer Aid (Deutsche Krebshilfe). CIO’s highly qualified teams of experts treat patients with malignancies according to the most up to date scientific research and best practice in medicine and nursing. Multidisciplinary expert panels develop new diagnostic and therapeutic concepts in close consultation with scientific working groups. Our patients have direct access to the most up-to-date national and international best practice guidelines.

Together against cancer – together for life

Being affected by cancer is a very personal and complex experience. Healing or easing of symptoms requires case management based not only on modern and current scientific knowledge but also on an individual and patient orientated diagnostic and therapy. CIO puts particular emphasis on a holistic and personal treatment approach. Specially trained staff, called ‘Patient Navigators’, are available to assist patients whenever needed.  In addition to this, both Haus LebensWert on the Köln campus and Auenbrugger Haus in Bonn provide a unique offering of therapeutic, counselling and creative, artistic services.  This approach contributes to the concept of making patients welcome at CIO and ensuring they receive the necessary help to cope with their illness.

Even when, despite all efforts, malignant disease progresses, we do not abandon our patients. Medical doctors and nurses at the Center for Palliative Medicine at the Dr. Mildred Scheel Haus in Köln and the Paul-Ehrlich-Haus in Bonn, work closely with CIO clinicians and provide support for the patients, their relatives and friends.
