By means of computer tomography (CT), a further development of radiological techniques, sectional images of the organs within the abdominal cavity are generated. Normally a contrast agent is used to improve imaging. The procedure is performed inside a ‘tube’ in which individual images are taken from a variety of directions. Metaphorically speaking, the abdomen and the pelvic region is being cut into ‘slices’. Using a computer, all the different images can then be brought together to create a 3D image. Based on this images, more accurate clinical assessments can be made than with conventional x-rays alone.
