Staging of Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is classified into different stages. The classification is made according to international standards and is based, among other things, on the spread of the disease. In order to establish the extent to which the disease has spread, and whether other organs besides the intestine have been affected, a range of tests need to be carried out (e.g. ultrasound of the abdomen or chest x-ray). These are called ‘staging examinations’ and aim to provide the following information:

  • How large is the malignant cancer?
  • How far has the cancer spread?
  • If the cancer has spread to organs other than the intestine, what are these organs and how many?

The results of these staging examinations are decisive for the choice of your cancer therapy. However, all this will be discussed with you by your treating specialist in a comprehensive, clear  and understandable manner.
