Blood tests provide information on your general condition as well as on the function of organs such as kidneys, liver and thyroid. An important pre-requisite for commencing a chemotherapy for example, is a sound functioning of these organs. In addition to this, blood tests determine the so called tumour markers (CEA, NSE, CYFRA 21-1). These are messenger substances which are built by a tumour itself, and, depending on the growth pattern of the tumour and its mass, are delivered into the blood stream. Tumour markers do not play a role in the confirmation of a diagnosis, however, they may be used as a follow-up tool.
