Causes, Prevention and Symptoms

Causes of Lung Cancer

As a general rule, there can be a variety of causes in the development of lung cancer, including so called ‘carcinogens’. These are substances which damage the genotype of lung cells. A degeneration of cells and their unregulated growth can occur, even after a dormant period of 20 years or more and can develop into lung cancer. Smoking is still most significant cause of lung cancer. The probability for developing the disease is ten times higher than it is for non-smokers. Smoking as well as passive smoking increases the risk of cancer.

Lung Cancer Prevention

The most effective way to prevent lung cancer is to avoid carcinogenic substances. The most important measure is not to smoke or to cease smoking and to avoid passive smoking. Even after many years of smoking and at an advanced age, it is still advantageous to cease smoking.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

The first signs of lung cancer are often uncharacteristic because they are not distinguishable from typical symptoms of a common cold. Perhaps you develop a cough, breathing difficulties  and chest pain. Weight loss, fever and blood stained sputum are signs that the disease is most likely at an advanced stage. Each cough which lasts longer than 3 weeks, therefore, should be investigated more closely by a lung specialist.
