By means of computer tomography (CT), a further development of radiological techniques, the chest region is presented in functional and layered images. The examination is usually performed by using a contrast medium, which has no significant side effects. The procedure itself is performed inside a ‘tube’ in which individual images are taken from a variety of directions. Metaphorically speaking, the chest is being cut into ‘slices’. Using a computer, all the different images are then calculated and brought together to create a 3D image. Based on this picture, more accurate clinical assessments can be made than with conventional x-rays alone.
