Examinations required for Staging

To find out whether organs other than the lung are affected by cancer, a series of examinations will be carried out. These are termed ‘staging examinations’ and are aimed at providing the following information:

  • What type of lung cancer it is.
  • Is the cancer localised?
  • How far has the cancer spread?
  • If the cancer has spread from the lung to other organs, which ones are they and how many?
  • How differentiated are the cells?

The results of these staging examinations are essential to select the best therapy. If the cancer is relatively small and limited to the lung, a localised therapy is sufficient. However, this is dependent on tumour type. When metastases  are present, a combination of localised therapy and chemotherapy is carried out where appropriate.
