Histology and pathology deal with tissue samples. The purpose of this medical sub-speciality is the early detection of cancers or through identifying the cell structures of the cancerous tissue, to classify different malignancies according to scientifically determined categories. Tissue samples can be obtained through a bronchoscopy as an outpatient or during your surgery. From this sample, wafer-thin tissue samples are prepared and microscopically assessed. In the case of lung cancer, this examination of the tissue sample serves to determine whether your condition needs to be allocated to the non small-cell or the small cell lung cancer category.
