Radiation of Stage I and II in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

After surgery, a histological tissue examination will determine whether the tissue’s edges are free of cancer. If so, this is called RO status (residual or free from rest tumour) and indicates that the tumour was completely removed.

If it is not possible to remove the tumour completely, radiation therapy will be suggested to you. In this procedure, the actual tumour (primary tumour), the affected lymph nodes and the neighbouring lymph nodes in the mediastinum, will be irradiated. When many lymph nodes in the midfield or the lung’s upper lobe are affected, additional irradiation of the lymph nodes in the chest and possibly above the clavicle (i.e. supra clavicular) is carried out.
