In order to regain as much physical strength and mobility as possible after cancer treatment, most patients are entitled to rehabilitation. In the case of patients covered by statutory health insurance, rehabilitation services are provided by that sickness or pension fund. In the case of privately insured patients, rehabilitation is dealt with under the individual health insurance contract. Rehabilitation includes aftercare services provided by special rehabilitation centres, or services offered in the ambulatory outpatient setting. Where appropriate, services also include reintegration at the work place and other support services.
Whether an inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation is useful can already be determined at the CIO level. The social services of the participating clinics are available as contacts and, when necessary, assist with the treating doctor to complete the necessary paperwork (applications). For statutory insured patients already discharged, central rehabilitation centres have been in operation since 2002. Information as to the nearest contact point can be obtained from a sickness fund or from the Internet at: http://www.reha-servicestellen.de.
