Peak Pain (Breakthrough Pain)

Episodes of pain peaks are also called ’breakthrough pain'. Such pain levels can unexpectedly reach a higher plateau than previously experienced and can last minutes or longer.  The particular characteristic of breakthrough pain is that it may occur even during the maintenance of adequate pain management, i.e.  a quasi breach of therapy barriers occurs. Breakthrough pain can be triggered through particular movements such as swallowing, passing water or coughing or occur spontaneously. To treat breakthrough pain, special fast acting opioids are called for. You should take these early enough and as often as necessary to deal with the breakthrough pain.  They should thus, be available to you quickly. If necessary, you will receive a higher dosage of your regular pain relief regimen from us until  the pain has eased.
