The Concept of early Palliative Medicine Integration

New research suggests that interventions which focus on improving quality of life have a positive effect on the therapeutic progress of seriously ill people. This is why CIO introduces you very early on – often soon after establishing a diagnosis - to palliative care services. We call this the ‘concept of early palliative medicine integration’ whereby your treating CIO doctor requests a palliative care physician to be present during your first visit at the oncological outpatient department. The paramount objective is to alleviate physical and mental complaints as quickly and comprehensively as possible in addition to the measures aimed at reducing the tumor. CIO places palliative medicine as the second pillar of your treatment, next to the classical treatment directed against the cancer itself.

We want to make sure that you

  • know where and how you can access specialised assistance when fears, psychological imbalances, depression, pain or other physically compromising symptoms emerge;
  • can access this help quickly and without delay whenever required. This is possible when you are known to the team and know the contact persons;
  • are aware from the beginning that we not only treat cancer but also want to help you maintain your quality of life as far as possible.
