When will the Palliative Care Team become involved in your Treatment?

The progress of serious illnesses can be associated with a variety of physical and psychological symptoms, however, this is not necessarily so. A prognosis if and when symptoms emerge is not possible because each course of illness is different. Furthermore, each person will experience symptoms differently, depending on their individual physical and mental condition.

The appearance of psychological or other symptoms cannot be predicted and the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends early palliative care co-treatment. For this reason, CIO offers you at the point of diagnosing a serious illness the opportunity to learn about palliative medicine and what it has to offer and to use it according to your needs if you wish.  We call this the ‘concept of an early palliative care integration’. During your first visit at the oncological outpatient department, your treating CIO doctor will consult with a palliative care physician to facilitate their early involvement.

When we recommend aspects of palliative medicine to you, this aims at providing the best of our care to make sure that we focus on the quality of your life in addition to the treatment of your primary illness. Our experience also reveals that patients have an improved sense of security when they are introduced to palliative medicine offers of assistance in addition to the ‘classic’ disease orientated treatment concepts.
