IOP Lung Cancer

Aim of the CIO interdisciplinary lung cancer project group is to improve the therapy of lung cancer. This includes the following strategies:

  • Basing  patient treatment on scientific evidence and frequently updating (current) clinical practice guidelines.
  • Treating patients in clinical trials with new and innovative drug regimens.
  • Developing individualised therapeutic pathways within the framework of an own translational trials program in close cooperation with working groups for Translational Cancer Genomics and Molecular Imaging at the  Max Planck Institute for Neurosciences Köln.
  • Providing intensive symptom-based and dignity focused care of the severely ill, in close collaboration with the Department of Palliative Medicine Köln and Bonn.

A particular concern of the IOP Lung Cancer is the close cooperation with medical centres and clinicians in private practice in the Köln- Bonn region. Fruitful cooperation does already exist with Dr. Stoelbe (Lung Clinic Merheim, Municipal Hospital of Cologne), Dr. Schlesinger (Department of Pneumology, Evangelical Hospital Köln-Kalk),  Dr. Diet (Department of Pneumology, Augustiner Hospital), Dr. Gerigk (Lung Center, Malteser Hospital Bonn), Dr. Reiser (Practice for Haematology and Oncology), Dr. Schnell, Dr. Schulz (PIOH Köln and with Professor Ko (Department of Internal Medicine, Johanniter Hospital, Bonn).

The close cooperation outlined above, led to the establishment of the Lung Cancer Group Cologne (LCGC) in 2005 chaired by Prof. Wolf (CIO Köln) and Dr. Stoelben (Lung Clinic Merheim). The aim and objective of this research group is the development of individualised treatment schedules with the aid of genome analysis and molecular imaging.
