IOP Multiple Myeloma

The IOP Multiple Myeloma (MM) Team is an interdisciplinary group of the medical specialities of haematology and oncology, clinical pharmacology, nephrology, neurosurgery, neurology, nuclear medicine, orthopaedics and radiology.  Its aim is to optimise the diagnosis and therapy of patients with monoclonal gammopathy of unclear significance or with multiple myeloma. The focus of clinical activities lies in the systemic therapy of multiple myeloma, including autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation, the radiotherapy and operative treatment of skeletal complications and supportive therapy. In addition to the scientific review of modern treatment strategies in large therapeutic optimisation studies, new pharmacological agents should, in particular, be made available to patients in the context of clinical trials conducted in Köln and Bonn.

To improve the diagnosis and treatment of multiple myeloma, a comprehensive treatment guideline was created. This guideline is closely aligned with the recommendations of the German Cancer Society and is based on the latest study results. The CIO Köln Bonn treats all its patients according to this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). The SOP for MM is already established and will be updated at regular intervals, thus guaranteeing consistency in the quality of treatment.

Clinical Services Offered for Multiple Myeloma Patients

  • Patient consultation times at the University Hospitals Köln and Bonn
    (Please use the request form)
  • Establishment of joint reviews of clinical case studies in Köln and Bonn
  • Joint in-house and continuing education and training sessions
  • Development of common clinical study concepts for the treatment of multiple myeloma

As part of the research priorities for the management and treatment of MM, a number of phase I-III clinical studies are being carried out at the national and international level. The current status of these studies can be viewed at the clinical study register. For many years, Associate Professor Scheid and Professor Schmidt-Wolf have led their own research groups, which carry out basic scientific studies of multiple myeloma. Both the Köln and Bonn centres have been collaborating closely in clinical and scientific projects. After the establishment of joint SOPs, regular meeting of the IOP-managers and their staff were initiated at which selected cases were discussed and new research approaches and protocols were presented.
